Independent guide — TextureCraft is in development. TextureCraft is an open-source Crafting App from the ArtCraft / storytold team. This page is a third-party guide — not getartcraft.com. texturecraft.com is an unrelated parking domain. Do not treat TextureCraft as a complete Adobe Substance 3D Painter replacement. Downloads only via the official apps page, GitHub releases, or ArtCraft Launcher.

TextureCraft: Open-Source 3D Texture Painting

TL;DR: TextureCraft is ArtCraft’s free, open-source 3D texture painting workflow in pure Rust: layers, masks, smart materials, GPU mesh-map baking and engine export. It is in development — useful to learn and test, not a promised full Substance Painter substitute. Prefer getartcraft.com/apps/texturecraft or github.com/storytold/texturecraft. Pair with MaterialCraft for procedural .mcmat materials.

What TextureCraft is

TextureCraft is the suite’s 3D texture painting seat: import a mesh, build texture sets, paint and mask in layers, bake mesh maps, preview PBR, and export for game engines. The UI follows conventions texture artists already know, which shortens the first hour — it does not erase the maturity gap versus a long-shipping commercial painter.

Treat author percentages as a self-scored roadmap signal, not a warranty. Hardware ray tracing in Rendering mode, some stylus paths, and parts of Alembic support are still called out as missing. If your pipeline depends on Substance-only filters, proprietary substance formats or studio-certified colour management, keep Substance Painter (or your current tool) until you have validated TextureCraft on your own assets.

TopicFact (sourced)
PositioningOfficial: “3D texture painting, rebuilt in pure Rust.” Paint PBR materials onto models in layers with masks, bake mesh maps, drive smart materials and export for engines. Open source, offline. Not Adobe Substance 3D Painter.
Painting & layersTexture sets, layer stack with per-channel blending, masks and generators, smart materials, 3D and 2D views. Brush stamps live on the 3D surface so strokes can flow across UV seams.
Bake & performanceGPU bakers for ambient occlusion, curvature, thickness and more. Tiled copy-on-write texel engine; viewport on Metal, Vulkan, DirectX 12 and WebGPU. README claims responsive 8K texture sets.
FormatsImport glTF, FBX, COLLADA, USD, Alembic, OBJ, PLY, STL and more. Export PNG, JPEG, TGA, TIFF, EXR and related maps at 8/16/32-bit, with UDIM tiles and engine presets.
StatusIn active development. README (checked ~1 November 2026 estimate): about 93% of a texture artist’s daily workflow end-to-end by the authors’ self-assessment — still not a promise of full Substance Painter parity. Missing items include hardware ray tracing in Rendering mode, some pen tilt/pressure paths, and signed-release polish.
LicenseMIT or Apache-2.0, at your option.
PlatformsmacOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and WebAssembly. GitHub latest checked: v0.3.0. Official standalone list still showed 0.2.0 files when checked; verify SHA256SUMS.txt.
AutomationEvery menu item/tool is a command: CLI, JSON control channel and MCP server can paint, bake and export.
With MaterialCraftMaterialCraft can send a portable .mcmat fill layer into TextureCraft; exposed inputs stay live there. See /materialcraft/.

FAQ

Is this the official TextureCraft website?

No. This is an independent Open Creative Apps guide. Official product page: getartcraft.com/apps/texturecraft. Source/releases: github.com/storytold/texturecraft. We do not host installers.

Is texturecraft.com the ArtCraft product?

No. texturecraft.com is a long-registered parking/lander domain and is not the ArtCraft TextureCraft product site. Prefer getartcraft.com/apps/texturecraft or GitHub storytold/texturecraft.

Is TextureCraft a full Substance Painter replacement?

No — do not plan a studio cutover on that promise. TextureCraft is an open-source, in-development 3D texture painting app with a familiar layer/bake/export workflow. The authors’ own status notes list remaining gaps. Adobe Substance 3D Painter remains the mature commercial reference.

How do I download TextureCraft safely?

Use getartcraft.com/apps/texturecraft, GitHub releases for storytold/texturecraft (verify SHA256SUMS.txt), or ArtCraft Launcher from official channels. Skip parking domains and cracked “Substance” mirrors — TextureCraft is free.

Is TextureCraft still early / in development?

Yes. Badges and README say in active development. A high self-assessed workflow percentage does not mean feature-complete commercial parity. Test your own meshes, UDIMs and export targets before changing a pipeline.

How does TextureCraft relate to MaterialCraft?

MaterialCraft builds procedural PBR materials in a node graph and can hand a .mcmat material to TextureCraft as a fill layer with live inputs. TextureCraft is the painting/baking seat; MaterialCraft is the procedural authoring seat. They are siblings in the same suite.

Is TextureCraft affiliated with Adobe?

No. It is an ArtCraft / storytold Crafting App. This guide is not affiliated with Adobe or the ArtCraft team.

Does TextureCraft support agents / MCP?

Yes. Official materials describe CLI, JSON control and an MCP server so agents can drive painting, baking and export. See also /artcraft-mcp/ for suite-level agent notes.

Can I install TextureCraft with ArtCraft Launcher?

Yes. The official apps page offers ArtCraft Launcher as the suite installer/updater path, alongside standalone builds. Use only official Launcher releases.
