LightCraft vs Adobe Lightroom
TL;DR: LightCraft is a free, open-source, Lightroom-style local photo library and non-destructive RAW developer. Its native catalog lives on your machine and there is no cloud sync. Adobe Lightroom is the mature subscription product, with a local-catalog Classic app and a cloud-synced Lightroom app. Choose LightCraft for a local, inspectable alpha workflow; stay on Lightroom for finished camera profiles, mobile/cloud sync, Book/Map/print modules and deadline migrations.
- Local catalog: append-only log on your disk, no account or cloud catalog in the native app.
- Free/open source (MIT or Apache-2.0) vs an Adobe subscription.
- Alpha gaps: incomplete camera profiles, some RAW fallbacks, no Book/Map/video/print modules.
- Lightroom Classic is local too — “local” alone is not the difference; maturity and ecosystem are.

Comparison table
| Dimension | LightCraft | Adobe Lightroom |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor | ArtCraft / storytold (independent open source) | Adobe Inc. |
| Price / licence | Free. MIT or Apache-2.0. No subscription for the native app. | Paid subscription. See Adobe Lightroom for the current plan. This guide does not quote a price that was not re-checked today. |
| Catalog | Local albums, nested folders, ratings, flags, color labels, field search and virtualized grids. The catalog is an append-only log you can back up yourself. | Lightroom Classic uses a local catalog; the cloud-branded Lightroom app uses a synced cloud library. Neither catalog opens inside LightCraft. |
| Cloud sync | Native app: no account, no cloud, no telemetry, no subscription. lightcraft.run stores an experimental library in the browser and calls that storage experimental. | Cloud sync and mobile copies are a core Lightroom path, especially outside Classic. |
| RAW | In-house decoders for common camera RAW types, with honest holes: some CR3 variants and compressed Olympus files use the embedded preview, and measured per-camera color calibration is incomplete. | Mature camera support, Adobe profiles and a long lens-profile library. |
| Develop / masks | Scene-referred 32-bit float pipeline, light and color controls, tone curves, texture, clarity, dehaze, vignette, grain; brush, linear/radial, luminance/color range and sky/subject/background masks. Some AI masks need an optional model you install. | Mature develop controls, AI masking and Adobe’s profile ecosystem. |
| Modules | Culling, develop, masks and export. Book, Map, video editing and direct printing are not in the app. | Book, Map, Print, slideshow, web and mobile/cloud workflows depending on the app. |
| Maturity | Alpha. Authors: ~82% by feature count, ~61% as a day-to-day product, ~51% for a typical working photographer, ~65% for casual use. | Mature commercial catalog and develop ecosystem with a support and profile stack. |
| Platforms | macOS universal, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and a WebAssembly build. Latest GitHub release checked: v0.18.0 (3 November 2026). | Windows, macOS, mobile and web depending on the Lightroom edition. |
| Automation | Same command registry for UI, CLI, JSON control and MCP (lightcraft-cli mcp). Local control, not cloud sync. | Adobe ecosystem scripting and integrations around the Lightroom catalog. |
Local catalog, no cloud sync
“Local” needs a precise definition because Lightroom Classic is local too. LightCraft’s native app keeps an append-only catalog on your machine, with no account, no cloud catalog and no telemetry in official materials. Lightroom Classic also keeps a local catalog, but it is a mature Adobe subscription product with Adobe’s profiles, mobile companion workflows and ecosystem. The cloud-branded Lightroom app is the one that syncs a library across devices.
LightCraft’s browser host at lightcraft.run is a separate, independent site. It keeps an experimental library in the browser and tells you to keep originals elsewhere. Do not treat that browser storage as a Lightroom-style cloud backup.
What you give up by leaving Lightroom
- Finished camera color profiles and a long lens-profile library.
- Mobile/cloud sync and the broader Adobe ecosystem.
- Book, Map, video editing and direct printing modules.
- A mature support stack and years of third-party training and presets.
The alpha scorecard is the authors’ own, not a lab test from this site. For a wedding or client archive, export a finished set and test a copy of the shoot before you move the catalog.
MCP and version freshness
The same command registry backs the UI, CLI, JSON control channel and MCP server, so an agent can import, cull, develop, mask and export locally. Start with the LightCraft guide and the ArtCraft MCP overview, then use the repository README for current command names. Lottie is not a LightCraft export format; for Lottie animation, use EffectCraft.
Version note: GitHub published LightCraft v0.18.0 on 3 November 2026 while the official standalone list still showed 0.17.0 files. Re-check both before installing.

LightCraft vs Lightroom FAQ
Is LightCraft Adobe Lightroom?
No. LightCraft is an open-source Crafting App from the ArtCraft / storytold team. It is not Adobe Lightroom and is not an Adobe product. This page is an independent guide, not Adobe or ArtCraft official.
Does LightCraft sync a cloud catalog like Lightroom?
The native app does not. Official materials describe a local append-only catalog, no account, no cloud, no telemetry and no subscription. Adobe’s cloud-branded Lightroom syncs a library across desktop and mobile; Lightroom Classic keeps a local catalog but remains an Adobe subscription product. lightcraft.run is a separate browser host with an experimental library, not official desktop sync.
Can LightCraft replace Lightroom Classic?
Not blindly. LightCraft is alpha and its authors put day-to-day readiness near 61% for the whole product and about 51% for a typical working photographer. Camera color profiles are incomplete, some compressed RAW files fall back to the embedded preview, and Book, Map, video editing and direct printing are missing. Test a copy of a real shoot first.
Does LightCraft support RAW files?
It has its own Rust decoders for DNG, CR2, CR3 (not every variant), ARW, NEF, RAF including X-Trans, RW2, PEF and ORF, plus JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP and more. Some compressed Olympus files and some CR3 variants fall back to the embedded preview. Check your own camera before migrating.
Is LightCraft free?
Yes. The native app is free and open source under MIT or Apache-2.0. There is no subscription for the local app. Adobe Lightroom is a paid subscription; check Adobe’s current plan for pricing.
Where do I download LightCraft safely?
Use getartcraft.com/apps/lightcraft, GitHub storytold/lightcraft releases, or the ArtCraft Launcher. Check SHA256SUMS.txt. lightcraft.run is an independent browser host, not the official installer. Skip “cracked Lightroom” mirrors; LightCraft is free.
What is the MCP story?
LightCraft exposes the same command registry to the UI, a CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server (`lightcraft-cli mcp`). An agent can import, cull, develop, mask and export locally. That is local automation, not cloud sync.
