Lottie: what moves and what does not
Lottie is the honest bridge between these apps. It is a JSON-based animation format for web and app playback, not a full compositing project. EffectCraft imports a Lottie file as a new composition and can export .json or .lottie; its exporter lists features that Lottie cannot express.

For a web or app animation, build a small test export first and play it in the target player. For a broadcast or client comp that must stay editable in After Effects, Lottie is the wrong container — keep the .aep and the Adobe seat.
Who should choose which
- Try EffectCraft if you want a free, local compositor to learn motion graphics, script a pipeline with an agent, or produce Lottie for a web/app surface.
- Stay on After Effects if you must open existing .aep projects, depend on AE plug-ins, need a fully tested Windows/Linux pipeline today, or have a client deadline that cannot absorb render-fidelity differences.
- Use both while you evaluate: keep the AE project as the source of truth, export a small shot or Lottie to EffectCraft, and compare the result on your own media.
EffectCraft MCP and version freshness
The same command registry backs the UI, the CLI, the JSON control channel and the MCP server. That is useful for local, inspectable automation, not a cloud render farm. Start with the EffectCraft guide and the ArtCraft MCP overview, then use the repository README for current command names.
Version note: GitHub published EffectCraft v0.21.0 on 3 November 2026 while the official standalone list still showed 0.20.0 files. Re-check both before installing and do not mix a CLI from one release with the desktop app from another.

EffectCraft vs After Effects FAQ
Can EffectCraft open .aep or .aepx files?
No. EffectCraft saves its own .ecproj format (versioned JSON) and cannot open After Effects .aep/.aepx projects. There is no import path that preserves an existing AE comp; you rebuild the shot in EffectCraft or keep it in After Effects.
Do After Effects plug-ins run in EffectCraft?
No. After Effects SDK plug-ins do not run. EffectCraft has its own built-in effects library and layer styles; third-party AE plug-ins are not compatible.
Is Lottie a full After Effects replacement?

EffectCraft is a compositor for motion graphics and VFX: layers, keyframes, effects and 3D inside a composition. FilmCraft is the suite’s timeline editor for cutting, colour and sound. They are separate apps; use FilmCraft to edit and EffectCraft to build shots, titles and composites.
